On the day of Belly's sixteenth birthday, she invites Cam to attend the annual family dinner. They kiss for a moment, even unbuckling their seat belts, before she leaves to go back inside. He asks if he can kiss her and she nervously accepts. ![]() He drives her home and she thanks him for the great time, lying that she was just dehydrated before. Back in the car, Belly thanks a recently returned Cam for the soda. She gets rid of the boys before Cam returns. She quickly asks Cam to get her a drink so he does. Moments before they kiss, Belly sees Steven, Conrad, and Jeremiah pull up in their car. But the way she feels in this moment is what everyone talks about. Her inner voice reminds her that she's only kissed boys during spin the bottle, not in real life, not because they both wanted it. He wants to be able to explain them, some of them. There are many inexplicable things about the ocean. After a while, she asks him why he chose marine biology. As Audrey Hepburn delivers her monologues, Belly and Cam's hands inch closer together until they become intertwined. They watch the movie in silence which is a little awkward. They're going to see an old movie called Sabrina, which she recognizes. That night, he picks her up at Beck's Beach House where he remarks on her looking less wistful. He wonders if going to a drive-in movie tonight would help her wistfulness, and she thinks it would. He doesn't want her to be wistful but the wistfulness has set in. If he'd looked behind him he would have seen a sweaty version of her looking wistfully toward his boat. She went to the marina yesterday but his boat had already left. She stops Cam in the hall and explains that she's technically a deb. Belly attends the Country Club's first debutante practice when she sees Cam in the hallway. The next day, she misses the whale watching boat by only a few minutes. Belly secretly wonders if this is her summer wish - this night, this boy. ![]() She agrees to come - after all, he'll need his hoodie back. Cam concedes that she should go but invites her to the whale-watching boat at dawn. Jere is unmoving in his position and tells her to get in the car. ![]() Belly argues that they aren't total strangers as they met in the seventh grade. He introduces himself as Cam, correcting to Cameron, so Jeremiah jabs that his name is "Cam Cameron". She wants Cam to give her a ride home but Jere refuses to let her get in a car with a guy she just met. Jere puts Conrad in the back of his car then tells Belly to get in. Jeremiah intervenes to see if she's okay, while Conrad returns to the fight. She tries to diffuse the situation but ends up getting elbowed in the face. She apologizes, tells Cam to stay put, and rushes off to help Conrad. She gets distracted by Conrad's impending fight on the beach. He has to leave early for a whale-watching boat and begins to ask her to come. He admits it isn't total garbage as they do a fundraiser each year - Elizabeth Warren showed up last year. As they talk, he reveals he works at the country club so they talk about the deb ball. They're mad she came but he's happy to see her. Cam asks if one of the other boys she talked too are her boyfriend but they aren't. She asks if everyone saw her fall before - they did. He sees that she's cold and offers his hoodie which she accepts after some playful banter. She doesn't know anybody other than her family. He's from Cousins but doesn't remember seeing her before, though she admits to sticking close to home. He introduces himself as Cam, so she invites him to sit with her. They were in a seventh grade Latin convention together she placed second in the poem recitation.
